FSJ Sisters, Chennai
EMPOWERED BY FAITH
WE ARE COMMITTED TO SERVE
WITH LOVE & COMPASSION
We, the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph, an indigenous congregation of women religious, founded by the Most Rev. Bishop John Aelen, the Archbishop of Madras, on 13th February, 1883, under the patronage of St. Joseph at Vepery, Chennai – 600 112.
Bishop John Aelen, our Founder, was a daring visionary who had the inner courage to “Proclaim the Year of the Lord’s Favour” to
all those who were pushed to the periphery of the hierarchically structured society.
He emphasized and gave us our primary goal and charism, the ardent desire to strive towards liberation in solidarity with the downtrodden and
the oppressed, with a special emphasis on women and the integral growth of female children

Spirituality of FSJ
We, the FSJ Sisters, follow the vision of St. Francis. Our sisters live together, pray together, support one another like a family, and work in the world with the charism of our beloved founder, John Aelen. We exercise to exemplify the concurrent simplicity and challenge of Franciscan spirituality, which are clear and direct reminders of the Gospel life.
We cultivate Franciscan hearts open to what Pope Francis calls the Joy of the Gospel. This not-so-special spirituality is an invitation to a relationship with all people, to work with our brothers and sisters in everyday life, and to follow in the footprints of Christ. From a more positive way of thinking about God and creation, we can but in order to transform the world into a communion of love centred in Christ. Therefore, to deepen our relationship with God in the Franciscan way, we regularly and attentively contact with the world in its simple, humble state.
